nanzenji in the fall

I used to have photo albums online with all of my thousands of pictures from Japan. However, in the three shifting of websites, I lost the patience to re-upload. And so, I have decided to revisit some of my favorite photos from Japan during this month of daily blogging.

This was taken in the fall of 2002 at Nanzenji Temple in Kyoto. Nanzenji was pretty much across the street from my school and I would often take walks there or ride my bike through the grounds. What I particularly liked about Nanzenji was the large bronze incense burner into which people could place sticks of incense. It sat in front of one of the main halls and depending on the wind, you could smell the incense wafting even at the far corners of the grounds.

One of my favorite places to eat, Okutan, was situated just on the edge of Nanzenji. They specialize in boiled tofu, which said in English sounds horrible, but is one of the most delicious things in Japan. It was an expensive meal, however, so I only ate it on my birthday and very special occasions. Ah, how I wish I were there to eat it this week!
