assessment

I don't make New Years Resolutions. Instead, I find some goal with a concrete deadline, and work toward it. Right now, it's the Indianapolis Mini-Marathon on May 3. My goal is to be able to finish this half marathon in under 1 hour 50 minutes.

This week I started initial training. I'm not particularly out of shape, but I am out of running shape. I've started from this point many times before and I always end up feeling like I've worked my way back into a good spot by the race. This time, however, I thought I'd measure my success a little more objectively. So today I went to a Fitness Assessment Consultation.

They pinched my fat, measured my heart rate, made me ride a bike, and do other such assessment exercises. I won't tell you all the little numbers they wrote down and printed out for me. For the most part, I was average. What surprised the guy doing the evaluation was that my Resting Heart Rate was so high (Needs to Improve), but so was my Handgrip Strength (Well Above Average.) Huh.

At any rate, I'll go back in a couple of months and see if I can do a few more pushups.
