I’m going away for the weekend. I am excited about visiting a new country, but I am not excited about the fact that I will be in a group of middle-aged housewives fawning over Korean drama stars and scurrying after a flag-bearing tour guide in white gloves. In prepartion for my little jaunt, I have studied essential Korean phrases and the Korean alphabet, I have armed myself with an English language tourbook, and I have resolved to avoid buying anything at the Duty Free store. I plan on spending the next few days wandering empty streets looking for open yakinuku (Japanese word for Korean barbeque) restaurants, challenging myself with eating as many versions of kimchee as I can find, and avoiding Japanese tourists.
