washi

Making Japanese style paper in Kobe
gathering the pulp, drying the paper, colored washi

On our way home from Arima we stopped by Kobe to see the Iminkan (Foreigners’ Houses) built in the early 1900’s by merchants. It felt really wierd to be in an old style American house with the signs in Japanese. We also walked through a collection of art-related shops, including a place that was making washi, Japanese paper. We ended the day, and the trip, with Chinese food from Chinatown. You can’t go wrong with sesame balls.
