great lake effect

My mother and I took a little trip up to Western Michigan this week. The original plan was to tour five or six lighthouses of Lake Michigan and camp in State Parks on the beach. Due to thunderstorms and laziness, we only saw three lighthouses and stayed in places with free continental breakfast. Despite the these changes, the unexpected fluidity of our travel plans allowed us to learn these things about Western Michigan:

1. All the highways are speed limit 70mph. At least, we think they were.
2. The signs hanging with the stop lights are all lit-up boxes.
3. The Coast Guard Carnival in Grand Haven is the first week in August.
4. You can never turn left. There are special u-turn lanes just down the road instead.
5. Bring a designated driver for the Fenn Valley Vineyard Tour; tasting 16 different kinds of wine in an hour and a half leaves everyone feeling mighty friendly.
6. Wooden shoes are comfortable.
7. The roads are so nice, you should travel them twice.
8. Freshly picked blueberries and peaches are just off the side of the road.
9. The World’s Largest Weathervane is in Montague, Michigan.
10. If you drive for three hours on a highway in Michigan, you will cross the Kalamazoo River nine times. At least.
