school spiritless

Boston University never had such school spirit, did it? When the first week of class rolled around, was every other person wearing a t-shirt that proudly proclaimed their alma mater? That’s how it is at IU. I’m sure the bookstore does a brisk business in providing the wardrobe for every incoming freshman and supplements for their parents as well.

I have never been a fervant alumna of any school or program, and this time is no different. The only way you will see me wearing an Indiana anything is if it came to me free. I will probably only attend a football or basketball game if someone else is paying. You will never see an IU flag hanging from my window, a decal stuck on my (non-existant) car, or an officially logo-ed notebook in my hands.

For while school name dropping works like a charm in Japan, all those decorations are worth nothing in the US without proof of a decent education behind them.
