The most frequently asked question on this campus must be, “And what will you do after you graduate/get your masters degree/finish your dissertation?” If I had a dollar for every time I was asked, I’d have enough for a nice night out. The thing is, no one really knows what they’ll be doing next. I’ve only been here for a month, and you want me to tell you what I’m going to be doing in two years?
It seems that the academic world, while apparently free-thinking and do-it-your-own-way, is actually incredibly strict and unyielding. There are specific hoops through which one must jump in order to climb the ladder successfully, and there are specific relationships to foster in order to get the right signatures. Have a placed my train on this track? Don’t buy your ticket yet, because it’s going to be a few years before I can truthfully answer that question.
