the days before christmas

Being on a college campus, I seem to have missed most of the Christmas hoo-ha that overwhelms most commercially situated areas. Sure, the Union tower is decorated with an incredibly suggestive giant candle and every lamppost on campus has a fake wreath with a bright red bow, but Santa Claus and his gift card-pushing elves have yet to jump from my television screen to the streets of Bloomington. And I am thankful for that.

I like Christmas to be subtle. I like Christmas to sneak up on me. I like to wake up on Christmas Eve Day and realize, “Huh. I think tomorrow is Christmas,” and then go back to bed because I’m on vacation. I like there to be freshly fallen snow on Christmas Day, not two week old frozen slush peppered with sand and stones from passing traffic. I really like that none of my neighbors set up Santa Claus on a motorcyle or dancing reindeer in their front yards.
