While the rest of the world was lining up for Harry Potter this weekend, I was playing Ultimate in Louisville, Kentucky. Normally, Sam and I pick up at coed tournaments and play on the same team. This time, however, he played for a friend's mens team, and I picked up with a bunch of women from St. Louis University.
I'm not going to say I was looking for much success with this team, since there were a total of 12 of us, four of whom had never played Ultimate before. But the spirit and determination of the Tye-dye Tygers (um, we played in tie-dyed shirts?) was astounding, the new players' catches were amazing, and the more experienced players really stepped up to keep the offense flowing. Hence, we finished pool play on Saturday with a surprising three wins and one loss.
And then I taught them the joy of drinking and playing random games at the party.
On Sunday, we were down three players. The lack of subs didn't seem to matter, however, and we managed to win semifinals. The Championship game came down to Universe point (tie game, next score wins). Unfortunately, we lost, but coming in second place was just fine, because we played amazingly well for our small team and lack of experience.
Other exciting things: the adult size slip n slide at the party, our friends who won $200 at the casino, staying with my friend Jill, free beer, and going to a two hour practice after the tournament. I'm tired.
