madcity madtown

There are perks to dating an academic. One of them is being able tag along to conferences and enjoy the hotel and the hotel's pool. Right now I'm in Madison, Wisconsin, and it is lovely here.

Madison is quite possibly the most bike-friendly place I have ever traveled. Knowing something of this beforehand, I brought my bicycle and have spent the day biking around the lake, the parks, and the downtown area on large, well-marked bike lanes. The lanes are well-used by a mix of families on mountain bikes to hardcore cyclists. Most everyone is wearing a helmet and has some sort of light. It's refreshing.

Downtown is a nice place too. The capitol building is beautiful, there are a variety of restaurants, shops, and museums, and there is little traffic due to all the walking and biking. I spent some time in the Museum of Contemporary Art, Ragstock Recycled Clothing, and various other quirky shops. I even made a button at one.

Sam says I'm living the dream - the not working, sleeping late, doing whatever I want dream. He might be right. I am trying hard to enjoy it while I can. Tomorrow I'm going to the zoo.

This summer in Mountain View and San Francisco I've gotten spoiled with bike lanes. _Every_ driver yields to cyclists. I can (and do) go anywhere with just a bike. It will be disappointing to go back to Bloomington. It will also be depressing to give back the super nice bike that Google lent me for the summer.

Enjoy your late mornings!
