rustic wisconsin roads

Sam and I took a drive this weekend up to Eau Claire for some shopping we couldn't do in La Crosse. It was supposed to be an hour and a half drive. Two and a half hours in, we decided we'd taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Somehow, we ended up on the highway that follows the Mississippi River north through little river towns with art galleries, ice cream shops, and a hundred or so motorcyclists enjoying the beautiful late summer weather. We turned onto a Wisconsin Rustic Road and wandered a few miles on a one lane gravel road through forests and streams. After another hour touring the farmlands of northwest Wisconsin, we got to our destination and ate the first Thai food we'd had in months, among other things.

The drive back was much shorter, but much less interesting. I should have stopped at an ice cream shop on the way up, because there were none on the way back to La Crosse.
