the future generation

The fields were slowly emptying of the thousands of little soccer players and their parents, and the Ultimate players were taking over. I was tossing near one sideline when a mother and her son passed behind me.

Kid: What are all these frisbee players doing here?
Mother: I have no idea.

It wasn't a response of "stop bothering me with stupid questions." It was a "I am mystified by the fact that someone would a) be playing frisbee in the first place, and b) find it necessary to rent lighted fields to throw around a piece of plastic."

I hope she remembers this night 13 years from now when her child, tired of high school soccer, joins his other friends in defecting to the most popular competitive team sport in the country - Ultimate frisbee.
