reunite and reconnoiter

Sam had his ten year high school reunion this weekend, and I attended as Guest. When I first heard about it, I expected something like on Gross Point Blank - school gym, name tags, and people trying to impress each other with their success. Images such as that kept me from my five year reunion and threatened to dissuade me from the tenth as well.

I don't know whether it was Sam's class as a whole or just his friends, but the evening turned out to be quite different than in my imagination. Sure, the cliques seemed to be the same. I could point out to you the cheerleaders and popular girls, the nerds, and the crazy guys. But the event was held in the lounge of a bowling alley, there were no name tags, and most people seemed to be genuinely listening as their former friends talked about their current status. From the conversations I overheard, there was a good mix of people who hadn't changed and those who ended up in surprising directions.

The whole thing made me want to dig out my yearbook and ponder over people whose names and faces I have forgotten, remenisce about old times, and make up something ridiculous to tell people I have accomplished. At least I have a few years to come up with that one.
