sassafrasity

My mom got me a variety of loose-leaf teas for my birthday, and today I am drinking sassafras. I know that sassafras is used to flavor root beer, but I thought I'd wikipedia it and see what I could learn about it. And it turns out that sassafras is not just your innocent soda flavoring.

Firstly, it is a nifty tree. It has three different leaf patterns on the same tree. Secondly, the use of its oil for food, perfume, or soap has been banned by the FDA since the 1960s because it is carcinogenic. And lastly, the buying of safrole, the oil, is strictly monitored by law enforcement because it is used in the production of the drug ecstasy.

This leads me to wonder, am I drinking a drug, or just an imitation?
