There's a cooler in the closet, and it has been home to a slowly starving spider for about four weeks now. Compassionate as we are, we do not kill spiders. However, we do carry out this evil experiment - how long will he live trapped by the slippery sides of our Coleman? Yesterday, Sam checked in to find that another spider had slid down into our unintentional prison. This one is smaller than the first, and we are curious to determine whether his two missing legs are a prior injury or a result of the initial resident's hunger.
On a similar note, I was sitting outside today when a massive hornet (the size of my thumb, at least) flew toward me, veering off at the last second to land on the steps beside me. It was burdened by a cicada of approximately the same size struggling to release itself from the hornet's grip. This fight ended quickly, though, when the hornet pulled the cicada down into the deep recesses of the crack between the stairs.
