the nature of things

My house is in an older neighborhood and consequently it is surrounded by many old, beautiful trees. Just to the right of the porch is one such tree. In one of its lower branches a robin made her nest, and I often watch her feed her little ugly baby robins. They are so enthusiastically noisy about food that you can always hear when mama bird is bringing home some tasty bugs for them.

I've been sitting on the porch writing today and just realized that I hadn't heard them yet. I looked over and the nest wasn't there! Then I remembered the storm last night, and sure enough, the nest had been blown down into the driveway and then most likely run over by the neighbor. I want to go over and see if the babies are alive somewhere, but I know it is futile. So sad. Hopefully the cardinals in the back yard have a little more success with their brood.
