around town
Downtown La Crosse is a great mix of bars, eclectic stores, coffee shops, and nostalgic-looking empty storefronts. Sam's doing a "project" where we walk around a block and he writes down on a map the places we'd be interested in going to again. It's a good way to make sure you've seen everything there is to see.
My favorites and their quirks:
1. The vintage clothing store: Against one wall is the remainder of half an escalator. I don't mean the bottom half or the top half - there's the right half of an escalator running up the wall.
2. The candy store: It's just a small hole-in-the wall shop filled with boxes of chocolates and bags of hard candies, all handmade locally.
3. The antique store: Three floors of an old warehouse stocked full of antiques. It's amazing how I could buy this stuff at a garage sale for $2, but in an antique store it costs $70.
4. The empty theatres: Their marquees still boldly proclaim the excitement of a night out.
