At our old apartment, we had a yard and some space to do some composting. Our new place does not provide that option. We create quite a bit of vegetable waste, though, and wanted to do something with it besides putting it into the trash. So we decided to vermicompost.
Meet our worms, all 750 of them.
They live in a rubbermaid container about a foot deep, a foot wide, and a foot and a half long. Their bedding consists of quite a bit of shredded computer paper, so graciously provided by a dumpster behind a neighboring business. (Surprisingly, a bathtub full of paper compresses quite a bit when dampened with water.)
Redworms love to eat garbage, so that's what we're having them do. Over the course of three or four months, these worms will eat up our scraps and leave behind lovely fertilizer for our (or someone's) spring plantings.
Sam wants to be able to hear them munching, but so far, they've been pretty quiet pets.
