I wish I had a picture of this, but I didn't have my camera handy.
On our way out of La Crosse yesterday, we drove along the melting Mississippi. I glanced over and there on the floating chunks of ice and in the sky above were at least fifty bald eagles. It seems that the warmer weather brought them back to the land between the bluffs all at once. Their bright, white heads stood out like a connect-the-dots against the dark blue waters and bright blue sky.
I've probably missed any opportunity to view this scene again, since the ice will most likely be gone when I return, but I hope to see a repeat performance next spring. I think I'll make it my official signal that winter has gone.
