the hackberry squirrel

This squirrel lives in my hackberry tree
and comes down often to visit me.

He sits on my stoop for hours a day,
cracking walnuts and nibbling away.

He leaves the shells, he leaves the rinds.
He leaves dark walnut stains behind.

Millie will sniff around while I sweep,
but the squirrel's already in his tree, asleep.
