As far as insects as pets go, I'm a little less enthused about the worms than I was about the slugs. Sure, both the slugs and the worms do pretty much the same thing (munch on my compost), but the slugs were a little more lively and visible. The worms hide from the light, so when I start poking around to see how they're doing, they dive for the bottom of the bin.
I'm a little disappointed, actually, with the job the worms are doing. I know they can't eat all my veggie waste in one night, but I've had these guys on the job for a week and a half now, and I haven't been able to feed them more than once because they can't deal with it before it starts to rot and smell. I've read my worm book, and it tells me I'm doing everything right, but maybe I just have some slow worms. I don't know.
Maybe once they start producing some baby worms to help them out, I'll really be able to enjoy them and their supposed magical composting abilities.

I had worms for about six months. I do believe they started eating faster after a period of time. Once there are more, they naturally will die off to a level consistent with how much food they are getting. By the way, I never saw any dead ones - I guess they decomposed quickly or were eaten.
In the end, mine all drowned. I had holes in the bottom of my bin, but they became clogged with compost/dirt. After a heavy rainstorm, my worms were toast.
