One of my Japanese friends sent me this card for New Years. Isn't it pretty? It is in the shape of a hagoita, a racket for playing the badminton-like traditional New Years game of hanetsuki. You can't tell so much, though, since it's very elaborately decorated.
The woman is holding a hamaya, a lucky arrow to ward off evil and bring good fortune, and an uma-e, a placard onto which you write your requests for the gods to answer. Because this is the year of the tiger, her uma-e is decorated with a tiger.
